Negative Calorie Food

Not a farce but a pleasant truth!

Can one lose weight by eating a lot as well? This might sound little unreasonable but is indeed a fact. But hang on, before start hogging on those huge burgers, fries or pizzas, reading the first line, understand the whole story behind the concept.
Negative calorie food – What it is? Those foods that burns more calories in the process of being eaten and getting digested by the stomach than it provides to the body is called negative calorie food. Eating such food items create the calorie-deficit in the body essential for weight loss. Although, the term “negative calories” can be deceptive at times as it gives a false impression that some food items contain NO calories at all. This is not true.
How it works It is important to understand that calories are burned with each body function; be it eating, standing, sitting, or even sleeping. Therefore the process of digestion also does burn some calories while digesting the eaten food (approximately 10-15% of all the calories that we eat). It’s certainly a very hard work to break the food down and absorb all nutritive elements like protein, carbohydrates, fats, and minerals. Then getting the unused leftover out of the system is again a tedious task for the body.
There are some food items that require lots of energy in the form of calories to break them down and get absorbed. Some of these foods actually contain very less calories and, therefore, instruct the body to call upon more energy stored in the form of fat and glucose to finish processing the food. And such heavy duty foods are called negative calorie foods.
For an example, a raw piece of celery (containing approximately 5 calories) or a bowl of lettuce will require way more calories during chewing and getting digested, resulting in loss of calories from our body.
But then, even eating only negative calorie food will not make you thin unless you cut of other high calorie food. The trick is to eat zero calorie food more and leaving little space in the stomach for the rest sinful things.
List of negative calorie foods Foods low in calorie, full of water content and high in fibre makes to this list. These provide a lot of bulk and volume apart from nutrition. Most of fruits and veggies come under this.

  • Negative Calorie Fruits: Blueberry, apples, cranberry, grapefruit, lemon, honey dew melon, watermelon, blueberry, grape fruit, orange and strawberry.
  • Negative Calorie Vegetables: Celery, lettuce, cabbage, Asparagus, cucumber, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, papaya, beans, radishes and zucchini.

Points to ponder:

  • Don’t go by the literal meaning of this concept. Negative here doesn’t mean zero calories.
  • These are most apt for snack time and pre meal.
  • Eating only these can lead to various deficiencies and malnutrition.
