Types of Diabetes

There are mainly two types of diabetes.

  • Type I Diabetes in which the secretion of insulin totally stops
  • Type II Diabetes, when the working capacity of insulin gets disturbed.

Causes of Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes: It is an autoimmune disorder. It is suggested that a combination of genetic predisposition and some other factors provoke the immune system into attacking the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes: It is mainly caused by insulin resistance. No matter how much or how little insulin is made by the pancreatic cells, the body is not able to utilize it as well as it should be. As a result, glucose does not move from blood into cells. After some time, the excess sugar in the blood becomes a problem for pancreas itself causing it to make less insulin. Obesity: It is another leading cause of insulin resistance. People with type 2 diabetes are mostly overweight. Hereditary: Genetic factors are also likely to be a cause in type 2 diabetes. A family history of the disease plays a major role in getting the disease. Other risk factors for the development of type 2 diabetes include:

  • Being 40 years of age and older
  • History of gestational diabetes (high sugar levels in pregnancy)
  • Blood vessel disease
  • High blood pressure and high cholesterol
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Schizophrenia
  • Prediabetes or impaired fasting glucose
  • Giving birth to a large baby
